Battle of Breakfast Branch - Time line on Josiah Dabney Cawthon
On Mar. 9, 1818, Major Josiah D. Cawthon of the Telfair County (Ga.) Militia led 34 men into combat against 60 Indians in the "Battle of Breakfast Branch" near Abbeville, GA. Major Cawthon's outnumbered group lost that battle and had to flee. A historical marker near Abbeville, GA commorates that battle. (Google: Battle of Breakfast Branch Marker) Josiah had removed to Henry Co., Ala., settling in the Columbia area by 1821, or earlier. Several of his Cawthon siblings also removed to Columbia in the 1820s. The date of the Battle of Breakfast Branch helps to establish a time line on Josiah D. Cawthon. We know that he was still in Georgia in March of 1818. An article in the Mar. 3, 1887, issue of THE COLUMBIA ENTERPRISE (early Columbia newspaper) said that Josiah settled Columbia in 1815. The following excerpt is from that article: "Columbia was first settled in 1815 by Josiah Cawthon, who entered the land upon which it stands. For many years it [Columbia] merely existed as an insignificant village, so isolated as almost to be unknown to the outer world...." The "ENTERPRISE" article was off perhaps four or five years on Josiah. He could not have settled Columbia in 1815, if he was still in Telfair Co., Ga. in 1818.

Benjamin C. Lansdale - Henry County Surveyor
Thanks for your wonderful postings on pioneers Benjamin Lansdale, Ezekiel Attaway, Benjamin Lewis, and Josiah Cawthon . I hope there are more to come. I feel the information would be a great addition directly on their respective web pages. To that end, I've made you a Writer so you can edit and add content to web pages, create new web pages, and add photos. However, it you'd rather, I can extract the information and add it to the pioneers' web pages myself. Let me know. Jim
