Orphan Court minutes v. A, 1839-1928, Orphans Records v. C-D 1837-1846, FHL US/CAN Film 1288511.

Wiki member Jeff Gamble identified this new source on March 9, 2009. Even though the description for this microfilm indicates a beginning date of 1837 for Henry County, Alabama Orphans Court Records volume C-D, in the middle of volume C (out of year sequence), beginning on page 390, are early estate records for the years 1822-1836. Orphans Court, which pre-dated the Probate Court, and handled probate matters, was combined with the County Court in 1850, forming what today is known as the Probate Court. Some counties continued to call their probate records "Orphans" records. Orphans records include appraisements, accounts, records of settlements, records of administration, guardianship, inventories, etc.

UPDATE (July 2, 2009): Jeff Gamble and Jim Chumney have extracted all the pre-1830 names and details from Orphans Court Record Book Volume C. The spelling of a few names still needs to be resolved; a few pre-1830 facts need to be gleaned from cases that are dated after 1830; and several individuals who are mentioned in promissory notes need to have their Henry County citizenship verified through other means. Nevertheless, the creation of web pages for the bona fide new pre-1830 Henry County pioneers has commenced.

UPDATE (August 2, 2009): Eighty-nine new pre-1830 Henry County pioneers from Orphans Court Record Book C have been added to the website. There are a few more potentially-new pioneers to verify, approximately 450 new factoids for existing pioneers, and 93 individuals to add to the Excluded Individuals list. Work to enter all this information will take several more weeks.

Where did you find your relatives dating back to 1833? In what book since you have read all 107 pages? Did you go to the Clerk of Court to read this?

I found my relatives listen the Henry Co. Alabama Orphans court dating back to 1833. Specifically, it was the Skipper, James Madison 1824+1849, listed as Skipper, James M (1849). I have read all 107 pages from the original documents. However, I don't understand a lot of it. Do you know if any of those records have been transcribed and if so, how would I go about finding them? I would gladly submit mine but it is incomplete because I do not understand the language.
