Hughes, James 1816 Private in Capt. Robert Irwin’s Company while Irwin was in command of Fort Gaines along with James Gamble, son of George Gamble and Thomas Brown, son of William Brown. Settled in Henry County in late1816. Originally from Lawrence [Laurens] County, Georgia, son of Margaret Hughes, uncle of Gen. Alexander Curry Gordon also of Lawrence County, Georgia. Settled two miles north of the mouth of Phillips’ Mill Creek on the Chattahoochee River. Sold this claim to John Hines and purchased the claim of Bartlett Poindexter on the Yattawabee Creek (Yatta Abba/Abbie Creek) where he lived until he moved to Texas in 1829 or 1830. Sheriff and tax collector of Henry County prior to 1829, moved west prior to 1830 and fought in the war for the independence of The Republic of Texas in mid-1830s. Never married. The Henry County Register, June 13, 1873.
