In 1819, a list of inhabitants with taxable property was compiled for Conecuh County, Alabama by R. L. Deens, assessor of the general tax for Conecuh County. Since the area that subsequently became Henry County was part of Conecuh County until December 13, 1819, it’s not surprising that the names of pre-1830 Henry County pioneers show up on the 1819 Conecuh County tax list. The names that currently appear on both lists are:
|
Some of the 24 names above, such as John Adams and Thomas Jones, are quite common and may or may not represent a pre-1830 Henry County pioneer. Other names, such as Noah Cole and Robert Irvin, are quite unique and assuredly are pre-1830 Henry County pioneers. It is highly likely there are other pre-1830 Henry County pioneers on the Conecuh tax list, but it is not possible to know who they are without additional evidence.
What is surprising is that the 24 pre-1830 Henry County pioneers above aren’t clustered together on the Conecuh tax list. The tax list is not alphabetized, and it seems logical that the Conecuh County tax assessor would have recorded individuals in the order he encountered them on his travels through the county. However, only three of the pre-1830 Henry County pioneers above are recorded adjacent to each other: Garrett (Jared) Patterson, Robert Irwin (Irvin), and Wm. Hardredge (Hardridge).
It’s also surprising that a number of known early setters, such as George Gamble and William Brown, are not found on the 1819 Conecuh tax list. To paraphrase the 1819 tax assessor R. L. Deens, perhaps it was impossible to completely ascertain who was actually liable as there was a large scope of Conecuh County that had never had Law nor Officers amongst them.
The Conecuh County 1819 Tax List was transcribed from the original records by Mrs. Lula W. Minderhout circa 1981. A copy of the complete transcription (wrongly titled 1818 Tax List) is available from the Evergreen-Conecuh County Public Library, in Evergreen, Alabama 36401. In addition, images of the original 1819 Conecuh tax list document are available on line (link) as is another independent transcription (link). The two transcriptions differ slightly, plus as of April 8, 2010 the on-line transcription omits two individuals (Hiram Bruster and Robert Welden). Jim Chumney researched the Conecuh County tax list for pre-1830 Henry County pioneers in October 2009.
