There were numerous Constantine Newtons. I believe I am descended from one of these men.
I have the following descendants of Constantine Newton, b. cir 1810 and Elizabeth Newton. Constantine had a son, James, B. Newton, born 1787 and married to Nancy B.; Abraham Harrington Newton, b. 16 Jul 1836 and married to Martha Jane Richards; The son of Abraham was William Jasper Newton, b. 27 Feb 1862; The son of William Jasper was William Henry Newton, b. 06 Mar 1888 and married to Morning Telitha Butler, She was the daughter of Hiram Butler and Julia Ann Sketo of Houston AL. William Jasper was the father of .William Henry Newton, b. 6 Mar 1888. and hemarried Johnnie Frances Norsworthy in Montgomery. My father was the son of William Henry Newton and Johnnie. My fatherwas William Kirkpatrick Newton, B. 7 Feb 1915 in Montgomery was the son of William Henry and Johnnie. My mother was Edna Mae Holt , born in. Montgomery. William Kirk and Edna Mae had six children, William Kirkpatrick, b. May 6, 1935, Carol Anne, b. January 19, 1937, Mary Patricia (me) born May 27, 1939, and Edward Hiram Newton, b. 1 Jan 1941, these five were born in Montgomery. Early Joseph Newton, b. 16 Feb 1943 in Norfolk Va and Charlotte Donna, bo 24 Sept 1951.. I would appreciate any information regarding this family. There were many Newtons in Henry County and I get confused - are they all related?

I am surprised to find that there are no listings for the Herring Family within this collection. West & Charity Herring were wed in NC in 1828 and entered the newly-opened Alabama Territory in Barbour County. A son, Stephen, married Elizabeth Caroline Turner (des. of Noel Turners & Wm. Williams), and relocated his family in Henry County following the Civil War. Two of Stephen's brothers died in the war, Lewis Grad (Georgia) & Jackson (Virginia). Stephen & Emanuel survived. Emanuel is buried in Culp Cem..Stephen & Caroline named one of their sons Louis Jackson, for Stephen's fallen brothers. Louis Jackson married Pauline Whitehead, dau. of John Whitehead & Rachel Kirkland. "Jack" & Pauline entered Geneva County and had a large family, 7 m & 3 f. Both died in Geneva, he in 1941; she in '49. Their youngest child was named Louis Jackson Herring, Jr., and he was my father. LJ II is buried in Port St. Joe, Florida. I have some information on this family and have posted it on Ancestry.com. See Rod Herring, 3 Sept 1946. I would love to learn more!

I am trying to trace my family roots and I have strong suspicion that my ancestors were in Henry County during the early years. I would greatly appreciate any help that you might offer. I did find that Dempsey Fennell purchase something at an estate sale for Richard Horn in 1829 in Henry County. I dont know any of the details about that purchase. Later, I found a probate record for Dempsey Fennell showing he died in 1833. The same file showed Michael Fennell died in 1841. I would like to know there relationship. Perhaps brothers or father and son? I found Marriage records for Perry Fennell (1846) and Cader Fennell (1843), presumeabley all related. Perry and Cader were born in the Carolinas during the early 1820's according to later Census data. Cader moved to Georgia, but Perry stayed in Henry County and is probably burried there.

I have Humphry Pelham's father as Ambrose Pelham and his mother as Lydia (possibly Kirkland). The source of this information is supposedly "Scattered Thoughts of a Simple Minded Man" (Privately printed), by Daniel Henry Pelham, 1911. I would dearly love to have a copy of this book but can't find it on the internet. Does anyone know where I can find a copy?
It is also possible that Daniel Henry Pelham mentioned other pre-1830 Henry County Pioneers in his book which would be an added bonus.

I know the 1820 census for Alabama including Henry County was destroyed by fire. How was this list of surnames derived? This was a very critical census lost since Alabama became a state in Dec. 1819.

I am photographing a number of 19th Century Henry Co. documents, including a Benjamin Lewis deed dated Aug 21, 1839. This is from the actual, original hand-written deed signed by Benjamin Lewis with the signature of two witnesses, D. Caldwell and Richard McGriff. The deed describes the land as being in Henry Co., east half of the northwest quarter of section 21, township 4, range 29. This property is in the NW corner of the present town limits of Columbia, now in Houston County. A long stretch of the Omussee Creek is on this property. The Houston/Henry Co. line is the north boundary of this property. Below is a partial transcription: (excuse spelling)

I found my relatives listen the Henry Co. Alabama Orphans court dating back to 1833. Specifically, it was the Skipper, James Madison 1824+1849, listed as Skipper, James M (1849). I have read all 107 pages from the original documents. However, I don't understand a lot of it. Do you know if any of those records have been transcribed and if so, how would I go about finding them? I would gladly submit mine but it is incomplete because I do not understand the language.

Farmer, Luke 09/08/1797 Jerusha Barns was "big with child" and stated Luke Farmer was the father. Luke Farmer, Perry Hundley, Samuel Jarnigan, and Joseph Farmer were bonded for 200 pounds.
Bertie Co. NC Bastardy Bonds 1739-1805 If reference to this, Jerusha Standley Barnes became pregnant with Luke Farmers child. She had been married to John Barnes, Perry Standley was her brother and he was the Bondsmen. This has been transcribed wrong because it is hard to read. However, Perry and Jerusha were children of Edmond and Sarah MARGARET Perry Standley. Thanks Sherri |

Thomas ATES is said to have married Seana Foster in Santa Rosa Cty,Fl @1858.Census records show first known child born in 1859. Thomas ATES is listed on 1860,1870,1880,1890,1900 Census Santa Rosa Cty,Fl as Head of Household,1900 SRCty Census,Thomas C. ATES,71,born Al w/both of his parents listed as born in Al. Thomas ATES was father of Nancy Elizabeth ATES B.1864 SR Cty Fl. She married William Ezra PEADEN,son of pre 1830 Henry Cty Pioneer Samuel PEADEN who was born in Henry Cty Al in 1827 to Bartlett PEADEN and Ann SPRAWLS PEADEN. Bartlett PEADEN moved his family to now Santa Rosa County area in 1835 and they lived the rest of their lives in the area. as did son Samuel PEADEN.One son of William Ezra PEADEN and wife,Nancy Elizabeth ATES PEADEN married a very educated lady who early on kept written notes of the family genealogy. She is deceased but I have copy of her notes in which she has written that Thomas ATES,father of Nancy E ATES PEADEN was born 3/1829 in Henry County,Alabama. Alabama as his birthplace came from Census records, the Henry Cty part came from her handwritten notes. Nancy Elizabeth ATES PEADEN was her mother-in-law.This of course does not prove that Thomas ATES was indeed born Henry County. Further research will be needed. Just giving some extra information on the subject. Hope this helps.

I'm interested in Charles Wade Cox who was born 1893 in Elba, Al. He married Ellen Carr Cox and they had 4 children at the time of his death in 1903. The family lived in Whitfield, Manatee County, Florida and Millville, Florida, where Charles died. After Charles died the family returned to Ellen Carr Cox's hometown of Crestview, Fl. Ellen died in 1911 and the children, Lee Lewis, Alonzo, Edward Millage (my grandfather) and Ella were left orphans. Only Edward and Ella lived to adulthood. We are hoping to learn the names of Charles Wade's parents.

Rachel Renfroe (b. 4 Apr 1776) married Ephraim Ellis (b. 30 Jun 1774) in Georgia. They moved to Henry County after 1820, but I don't have the date. They both died in Henry County. I have not been able to find Rachel's parents. I think she must have been related to the Renfroe's in Henry County before 1820. Can anyone give me information?

I am same writer as above. Refer to 1830 Henry Cty Al Federal Census;,Jason AYTES age 48 POB Unknown,Elizabeth AYTES,44 POB SC,and others in this AYTES household ,all of the other AYTES listed as born in Alabama. If this Jason AYTES was age 48 in 1860 then he was born about 1812. Now there is Jason ALES,pre 1830 Henry County Pioneer who in 1829 purchased items at Henry Cty, estate sale. The first name Jason seems not as commonly used as other first names and the similarity in last names leads me to SPECULATE that with further research this Jason AYTES might be same as Jason ALES. Then too, on 1/13/1860 Mary AYTES "of Houston Cty,Al "got a Fed Land Patent in Henry Cty,Al. There is a 13 yr old Mary Ann AYTES listed w/POB Al.,in Jason AYTES household on 1860 Census. Hope this information is helpful.

Hello,
Does anyone know where I can purchase a copy of the Watford Family Book. It was originally written by James Horace Coulliette and revised by Margaret Josephine Phillips in 1986. I understand that Mr. Coulliette is deceased and the telephone number that I was able to find for Ms. Phillips has been disconected. My cousin who lives in Dothan has a copy of both books and I was able to look through it this weekend. It contains a treasure of information for my ancestry, the Joseph Watford line. I would very much like to purchase my own copies of one or both books. I appreciate any information that you can give. Thank you, Pam
